Faculty at WSU College of Education Weigh in on WA Governor's Proposal
When Gov. Chris Gregoire proposed a major overhaul of the state’s education programs last week, I needed some expert input in order to have an informed opinion. I’m still learning what I can. So far, most educators I’ve asked agree on the need for change, but have reservations about the governor’s approach. Or they like her proposal, but doubt it will get past the political hurdles.
Here are some of the comments I’ve received from my best source of information, the College of Education faculty:
Darcy Miller: It is a long overdue change. Folks involved with education from preschool to graduate school need to work together. As it is, their efforts are fragmented and disjointed. One group requires one thing, and another group mandates something else. While the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) sees its job as working only with K-12 schools, we in college teacher education programs must work with OSPI. It is involved with our accreditation, impacts the quality of our programs, and influences many aspects of teacher education. We need that office to view colleges of education as partners in preparing teachers.
Chad Lochmiller: There are two elements in the proposal that could, if implemented and funded, result in serious reforms. First, the governor’s idea of consolidation is good, except that she’s consolidating the wrong elements of the system. It makes more sense to consolidate the Department of Early Learning, OSPI, and the State Board for Community & Technical Colleges into one seamless system while leaving the university system independent. This would mean that the state is responsible for early learning through an associate’s degree. My belief is that we need to think in terms of a P-14 public education system. Every child should graduate with the skills and knowledge that comes with an associate’s degree and have access to the job market that the associate’s degree creates. Second, I like the creation of launch year for high school seniors — a concept that could work if OSPI and SBCTC were consolidated. Allowing students to begin exploring their professional interests in high school makes sense. We’re making a big mistake to route every child onto a college/university path. For some kids, that’s not what they want to do.
Leslie Hall: A new Department of Education is a great idea for several reasons. First, the state’s biggest expense after personnel is education. As the executive officer of the state, the governor needs to know what is going on in all areas of education. In addition, the current bureaucracy does not make it easy for K-12 educators, OSPI, or higher ed and their multiple committees to talk about the common goal of educating students. My hope is that a Secretary of Education would facilitate conversations so that efforts would not be duplicated and a common vision for P-20+ students would inform all who work in Washington’s education arenas.
Janet Frost: In my experiences related to the Riverpoint Advanced Mathematics Project, I strongly agree that the educational system is fractured. For example, although a uniform college mathematics placement test was developed for use by all institutions of higher education, it is not being enacted because of those very divisions. Likewise, education funding is often split up in a way that limits projects like ours. For example, we cannot be funded to provide professional development for college math faculty, only for high school math teachers, thereby losing an opportunity to strengthen teaching at both levels so that students can make the transition successfully.
Gene Sharatt: There is no question that overlapping and conflicting commissions, committees and boards of directors often impede improvements in educational attainment for our students. However, it is unclear how one secretary of education would streamline the efficiencies of these organizations, because it would be essential for the new secretary to form advisory committees for sound counsel. More importantly, maintaining public accountability is critical and the highest form of public accountability is the general election. Maintaining independent bodies to ensure checks and balances is preferable to appointed leadership under one party.

Ketika kita bekerja dengan koneksi internet dan perhitungan biaya internet tergantung pada penggunaan bandwidth internet ( jumlah Download dan Upload), maka software untuk memonitor bandwidth internet merupakan kebutuhan yang cukup penting. Ada begitu banyak software gratis untuk memonitor penggunaan internet ini, salah satu yang terbaik adalah NetMeter.
Software semacam ini tidak hanya diperlukan oleh pengguna internet dengan perhitungan berdasarkan quota, tetapi kita kadang juga ingin tahu berapa kecepatan internet saat kita gunakan. Hal semacam ini pun bisa kita dapatkan di NetMeter. Beberapa software monitoring sebenarnya sudah saya coba, tetapi sampai akhirnya saya memilih NetMeter, karena selain ringan, terdapat fitur-fitur yang menarik.

Hidden File Tool 2.0 telah di rilis
Pernahkah kita mengalami “kehilangan” data di flashdisk atau komputer karena ulah virus? atau tiba-tiba banyak file-file penting atau dokumen yang tiba-tiba “hilang”. Kadang data-data ini tidak sepenuhnya hilang, biasanya hanya di sembunyikan (hidden) sehingga kita tidak bisa melihatnya. Dulu saya pernah membuat software gratis Hidden File Tool untuk mencari file-file tersembunyi.
Setelah 2 tahun lebih tidak ada perkembangan, alhamdulillah akhirnya saya bisa memperbaiki software ini, dan kini telah hadir/rilis Hidden File Tool 2.0. Seperti software saya yang lain, saya tetap berusaha membuat program ini berukuran kecil (sekitar 40KB) dan hanya single file saja sehingga tidak perlu installasi (Portable).
HFT Versi 2.0 ini banyak mengalami perbaikan dan penambahan fitur dari versi sebelumnya, termasuk kemampuan menampilkan folder, tidak hanya file saja seperti versi 1.0. Apa saja fitur-fitur HFT 2.0 selengkapnya ? Berikut fitur sekaligus tambahan di versi 2.0 ini :
Mencari file dan folder tersembunyi (atribut Hidden) termasuk juga atribut : System, Archive, Read OnlyPencarian yang sangat cepat, mulai versi 2.0 dengan threading, sehingga proses pencarian tidak terganggu dan terhenti.Mencari file-file dengan ekstensi tertentu dan menyertakan pilihan tipe file-file yang banyak diakses atau mungkin berbahaya.Mengubah dan mengeset atribut file : Hidden, System, Read Only dan Archive Menghapus file dari daftar yang ditampilkanMenampilkan dalam warna yang berbeda untuk file-file tertentu (folder dalam warna latar kuning)
Dibanding versi terdahulu, HFT 2.0 mengalami beberapa perbaikan penting, seperti kemampuan untuk menampilkan hidden folder yang tentu ini sangat penting. Karena biasanya data-data yang disembunyikan virus termasuk foldernya.
Mungkin sebagian kita masih belum begitu paham apa manfaat nyata dengan menggunakan software ini. Berikut saya berikan contoh beberapa kejadian dan dengan software ini bisa membantu :
Mengembalikan file atau folder yang sebelumnya sempat “hilang” karena virus (hilang dalam arti disembunyikan).Biasanya virus akan mengganti file atau data penting di flashdisk dengan virus dan menyembunyikan file atau folder aslinya. Jika kapasitas flashdisk tinggal sedikit tetapi tidak terlihat adanya data atau banyak data yang tiba-tiba hilang, kita bisa mencoba menggunakan HFT untuk menampilkan file-file yang tersembunyi (pilih atribut Hidden ketika mencari). Setelah ditemukan kita bisa menampilkannya kembali dengan memilih file/folder yang tampil di daftar hasil pencarian, kemudian pada bagian Set Attribute hilangkan semua tanda check dan klik APPLY. Keterangan berhasil atau tidaknya akan ditampilkan di kolom keteranganDengan teknik mirip seperti diatas, kita bisa mengeset agar file atau folder menjadi tersembunyi, caranya pilih file/folder dari daftar/hasil pencarian dan dari menu Set Attribute pilih Hidden ( bisa memilih juga System serta Read only), kemudian klik APPLYJika kita ingin mencari file-file dengan ekstensi tertentu saja, pada bagian Filter isikan ekstensi file. Jika lebih dari satu pisahkan dengan tanda titik koma (;), misalnya : *.txt;*.rtf;*.doc.

Untuk mengetahui detail yang ada di komputer kita, mungkin kita biasa menggunakan teknik klik kanan MyComputer dan pilih Properties. Memang hal ini sangat praktis dan cepat, tetapi informasi yang didapatkan cukup singkat dan masih jauh dari lengkap. Dengan LookinMyPC, kita akan mendapatkan laporan(report) apa yang sebenarnya ada dan terjadi di komputer kita sendiri. Software gratis ini juga sangat bermanfaat untuk diagnosa komputer jika terjadi masalah.
Sebelumnya saya sudah pernah menulis tentang cara mengetahui spesifikasi komputer kita dengan Speccy. Dengan LookInMyPC, kita juga mendapatkan informasi detail apa yang ada di komputer kita. Bedanya, software ini membuat profile atau laporan lengkap dalam bentuk html, yang selanjutnya bisa dikirimkan via email untuk dilakukan pemeriksaan atau untuk arsip kita. Selain itu ada fitur untuk membandingkan hasil report yang sudah dibuat sebelumnya untuk mengetahui perubahan yang telah terjadi.
Laporan yang dihasilkan cukup lengkap, mencakup Hardware dan software, serta diagnosa sistem seperti aplikasi yang sedang berjalan, service yang di install, startup program (program yang berjalan dengan windows), windows update, koneksi jaringan yang aktif, event log dan berbagai informasi detail lainnya. Masing-masing kategori bisa kita pilih (disertakan) atau tidak.
